What s your metaphor...

Whilst working with a client recently I was struck by his strong use of metaphor throughout our coaching sessions.  They were always used with a degree of humour, which initially led me to overlook their importance.  It was following a later session when my client had become stuck that I reflected on his words - the metaphors came flooding back to me!

My client's use of metaphor was always very strong, depicting perceived impending conflict.  During our next session I sought my client's permission to explore his use of language in some detail.  It soon became apparent that his use of metaphor mirrored how he viewed his professional life in particular situsations.  It exposed a general lack of confidence, low self-esteem and the need for recognition.

Unfulfilling Desire Friday, Sep 19, 2008
We all have dreams about what we want or desire in life and that is normal. Desire will always exist, it is part of the human condition. We are surrounded and constantly bombarded by a vast media machine offering instant gratification through the acquisition of material posessions; trinkets that seemingly guarantee to endow endless happiness.

The attainment of our desires invariably does not produce the expected outcome. The novelty of the new car soon wears off. The thrill of our new acquisition fades, leading us to seek yet more stimulation.

For most of us, this is normal. But if desire is using up too much of our energy, causing stress and loss of sleep - it is clearly unhealthy. It may be time to analyse the true nature of the desire and assess the effort required to maintain it.
